Our event was again admirably supported by a broad community of active participants and contributors. 63 teams held heads high against torrential forecasts, greeted by a mere persistent drizzle. The manager in the bar at the Rugby Club commented to me afterwards that they were unsure whether we were going to show – “surely the event would be cancelled owing to rain”? What little she knew of the resilience of the runner.
Team captains successfully lead their teams to the line, and I express the organisers’ thanks to them for their persistence in accommodating all the complexities of getting their teams together.
Water stations were provided down the route by our guest clubs, which provide a very necessary contribution. On the day, perhaps they solved the Ancient Mariner’s conundrum of ‘Water, water everywhere, and not a drop to drink’. Our thanks again to them.
Two category titles were successfully defended, with Team Bath retaining the
Senior Men, and Halesowen retaining the Vets. The latter category was won by
the narrowest margin ever – a mere 8 seconds, with the ‘Chippenham
Vets’ knowing that a mere 1 second improvement per stage would have
sealed their return to glory last seen in 2004. Both Halesowen and
